The Dam That Reshaped Samsonvale

One project changed this locality more than anything before or since. North Pine Dam was built across the North Pine River and completed in 1976, and the water it holds back is Lake Samsonvale, one of the main drinking water storages for northern Brisbane and Moreton Bay. Filling it put a large part of the old Samsonvale district under water. Land was acquired, farms disappeared, and the cadastre that had grown up since 1845 was permanently altered.

The lake is still changing. Seqwater lowered the storage from 36 metres AHD to 34 metres AHD in early 2025, taking it to roughly 54 per cent capacity as a precaution ahead of strengthening work on the dam wall. That is an operational decision rather than a drought, but it means the visible edge of the lake currently sits well back from where locals are used to seeing it.
