How Rothwell Has Changed

Council built the Nathan Road Sports Ground at Kippa-Ring to replace the football facility at Rothwell Park, which flooded too often to keep using, and the replacement was finished in 2020. Underneath all of it the suburb still carries its own history, taking its name from Thomas James Rothwell, the RACQ president who drove the creation of the Anzac Memorial Avenue in the 1920s. Saltwater Creek. The creek runs along the southern and western boundary of the suburb and flows north out of Hays Inlet, which makes it tidal rather than fresh. Rothwell is one of the few parts of the peninsula genuinely prone to flooding because of it. So council’s flood check development report gives the level a design has to clear at a specific address, and it is the first thing worth pulling on any low block here.

Constraints from beyond your boundary. Anzac Avenue is a heritage listed avenue of honour as well as a state controlled road, so frontage work along it answers to more than council alone. Plans that never happened. In the late 1880s an estate called Isle of Man was advertised on land ringed by Saltwater Creek, ahead of a railway that took another 130 years to actually arrive.
