Surveyors in Nathan work on an unusual patch of Brisbane. The suburb sits about 9km south of the CBD, wrapped around Toohey Forest and Griffith University’s Nathan campus, with the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre on Kessels Road at its southern end. There is very little conventional housing, so the jobs skew large: campus buildings, sports facilities, reserve boundaries and steep bushland sites. What Is Being Built in Nathan

Almost all of it sits on campus. Griffith’s Brisbane South (Nathan) development program has several projects running at once: the nine storey N82 arrivals building, a sitewide services upgrade running from The Hub through to the Ridge car park, and a reinvestment in on-campus student accommodation. The older Kinaba and Girraween residences are due for demolition in 2026 to make room for that new accommodation. Alongside it, the Nathan Sciences Precinct redevelopment is upgrading labs and teaching space across buildings including Science 2 and Technology. Work like this runs on campus wide survey control, setout for each building, service location before excavation and as-built records once everything is covered. What Makes Surveying in Nathan Different

A steep, forested ridge. Toohey Forest covers much of the suburb, and building platforms here get cut into genuine slope. Grades, retaining and stormwater paths have to be designed against measured ground rather than a contour map generated from aerial data. A contour and detail survey is the base document for anything built on this terrain, and it captures the trees that will shape the envelope too.

Boundaries against reserve land. Plenty of titles here adjoin conservation reserve, university land or road corridor instead of a neighbour’s fence. Those lines are often unfenced, overgrown and marked by pegs placed decades ago. A boundary survey re-establishes them properly, which matters before any clearing, fencing or construction near the reserve edge.

Vegetation and planning controls. Since the forest is protected bushland, vegetation, biodiversity and hillside overlays sit across much of the area. They tend to set the building envelope more tightly than setbacks do.
